Suspected human trafficker arrested in Lagos

The Nigeria Immigration Service has arrested a suspected human trafficker and smuggler on Thursday, 31st October, in Seme, Lagos State.

The command’s Controller, Comptroller Joshua Ajisafe, said that the suspect is specialized in tricking young girls with a promise of providing legitimate well-paid jobs to them in the Republic of Benin and then take advantage of the girls and put them into prostitution and sex slavery.

Ajisafe added that the traffickers use to lay debt bondage on the suspected victims in case they attempt to escape. The traffickers would cut their pubic hair, fingernails, armpit hairs and threaten them with madness. Then the girls would go against their will and agree to prostitution and sex slavery. The woman would further promise them freedom after each of them have paid her a huge sum of money through the prostitution business.

Ajisafe said the intelligence team has swung into action and made all necessary investigation to apprehend the suspect and with the help of the Benin Republic police, they were able to arrest the suspect in a hotel in the Benin Republic.

The Comptroller added that the suspect had been handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further necessary action.
